Synopsis

A French Canadian lumber camp is divided into two factions, a lawless group ruled by Paul La Rue, and a church-going group. After La Rue saves Babette, an orphan girl, from being raped by Jean Follette, Follette angrily burns down the church and La Rue, suddenly starting to believe in God, runs into the church to save the Bible. Although he succeeds in uniting the community, he is gravely injured. Follette beats his wife Ena when she says she is pregnant, and he lies by saying that they are not really married. La Rue overhears her confession to the priest and offers to marry her to give the child a name. Desiring to punish Follette, La Rue recovers, but Ena tells La Rue that she still loves her husband and thus saves him. When Follette is killed by Babette's wolf hound as he again attempts to rape her, Ena declares her love for La Rue.
