Synopsis

After their mother, a poor widowed charwoman, dies, Charity and her little brother - whom Charity, because of her belief in the world of fairy tales, calls "The Prince" - are taken in by Merlin Durand. Merlin is the son of a miserly, grouchy millionaire, who cuts off Merlin's allowance until he earns a week's salary. When Charity learns that Merlin is unable to get a job, she and The Prince go to plead with Durand, whom she calls "The Ogre." After finding that Durand has left to take a "water cure," and that his servants have gone on an unauthorized vacation, Charity and The Prince hide in the house. That evening, Bill, a burglar, enters, but Charity, in her innocence, convinces him to be their protector. The next morning, Sam Smith, a bum, and Lucius Garrett, an unemployed Shakespearan actor, are invited to join what is now called "Charity Castle." After Durand unexpectedly returns, Charity pacifies him. He hires the guests to replace the servants, adopts Charity and The Prince, and reconciles with Merlin, who brings home a week's salary check.
