Synopsis

The history of the Directors Guild of America is recounted. Begun in the years when people in the United States were fighting for unions, the guild was initially not recognized by the movie studios. The organization was started by twelve men and evolved fairly peacefully until 1950 when president Joseph L Mankiewicz was branded a Commnuist and almost unseated Cecil B. DeMille. The history of the guild goes on from there, up to the formation of a Bill of Rights which was being developed during the filming of the documentary.
