Synopsis

Mariam Hardy persuades her husband to sell his rich Alaska claim and return to civilization for the sake of her child, Betty, but before they arrive a strange man stabs her husband and steals his money. Friendless and without funds, she and the child walk the streets of Tacoma; Uncle Toby, a "blind" beggar, saves the child from a runaway team and persuades Mariam to disguise herself as a blind beggar; and at the bench under a vast totem pole, she awaits the sight of the murderer's eyes. With her earnings, years later, she is able to send Betty to a fashionable seminary. Mariam recognizes Philip La Rue, operator of a cafe, as the villain; through a faked accident he meets Betty and Bruce Huston, her beau. Betty accepts an invitation to tea, but Bruce and the police arrive in time to save her from his attack; La Rue is killed, and Mariam is happily reunited with her daughter.
