Synopsis

When an epidemic of diptheria breaks out among the peasants, mine owner Leonard Sheldon sends for a physician, and Dr. Katherine Torrance answers the call, accompanied by her weak-willed brother Clifford. In examining the throat of her patients, Katherine uses a small electric light, and as the epidemic spreads, the superstitious natives ascribe the light as the cause believing it to be "an evil eye." Under the seriousness of their duties, Clifford braces up and becomes a great assistance to his sister. Meanwhile, the friendship of Katherine and Leonard grows into love, but Leonard believes that Katherine is in love with his assistant Frank King. As sentiment against Katherine grows, and she is threatened by the parents of a baby who died while under her care, she plans to leave until, at Clifford's urgings, Leonard takes her in his arms and proposes.

Notes

One item in the Paramount studio records states that Thomas Meighan, not Tom Forman, played the character of Leonard Sheldon. Other items in the studio records and all contemporary reviews, however, credit Forman and not Meighan. The studio records list the original title of the story and the working title of the film as A Woman's Victory, which is the title that appears on an existing print.
