Synopsis

In the little Dutch village of Olenberg, Gretchen, a foundling, is raised by the shrewish Frau Van Lorn. Gretchen's only joy is her love for Carl, the foundling son of impoverished parents. A series of calamities befall poor Gretchen when an old man, Mynheer Van Haas, offers to pay off Frau Van Lorn's mortgage in return for his marriage to Gretchen. Subsequently, Gretchen is falsely accused of theft and jailed. While mourning the loss of his sweetheart, Carl is taken away to the Palace of Olenberg where it is discovered that he is actually the heir to the throne, and was stolen from the king and queen as a baby. Carl accepts the crown, rescues Gretchen, and makes her his queen.
