Synopsis

Countess Natalya, a Russian refugee, supports herself and her invalid sister, Sonya, by dancing and singing in a Shanghai cafe. Eager to escape this life, she falls into the net of Sotan, who pretends friendship for her and arranges an official betrothal between Natalya and wealthy Wu Ting. With the betrothal money Natalya and Sonya escape to the United States, where Natalya marries American diplomat Roger Strong. Later, Sotan, who is secretly plotting to restore the Russian monarchy, follows her to America and attempts to blackmail her unless she gives information about Strong's mission to Pekin. But she denounces Sotan to Wu Ting, who, learning of Sotan's monarchist plot, kills him and, in gratitude, destroys the evidence of his marriage to Natalya.
