Synopsis

Mary, the daughter of wealthy but crusty Anthony Brenton, has been estranged from her father because she married against his wishes. She returns to her father's New England home but is turned out by the housekeeper, Mrs. Chumnige. Angele, Mary's daughter, poses as a Belgian refugee and wins a place in the home and heart of her grandfather. Mrs. Chumnige, who wants Brenton's fortune, arranges for her son Frank to marry Angele and is angered when the girl becomes enamored with Bob Fortney, a secret service agent posing as a naturalist. Although Frank is the German spy Bob is tracking, the villain accuses Bob of sending signals to German U-boats. Brenton and Bob reveal the truth to the angry townspeople, however, and while Frank and his mother are arrested, Mary and Angele find a permanent home with Brenton.
