Synopsis

Montenegrin Marko Martinovich supports his sister Sonya and their crippled brother Milos in a small cabin near Turkey, while Turkish nobleman Mahmud Hassan lives in a luxurious castle. During the Battle of Lule Burgess, Marko is killed and Mahmud is taken prisoner and given to Sonya to take Marko's place on the farm. Although Sonya humiliates Mahmud at gun point by making him bake, wash clothes, draw water, and plow the fields, they gradually fall in love. When the Turks retake the town, a drunken officer tries to force himself on Sonya. Despite the fact that the offender is a fellow Turk, Mahmud intervenes. After the Turks are ousted from the village, Mahmud returns home and finds that he has been stripped of his title and land, and banished for thwarting the drunken officer. Meanwhile, a band of scavengers burns Sonya's house, forcing Sonya and Milos to leave the farm. They meet Mahmud on the road and plan a new life together.
