Synopsis

At the outbreak of the war, Princess Cordelia Sanzio, a widow of extraordinary beauty, is living in Venice, beguiling all the men who cross her path. One of her victims is Harry Althrop, the son of an American diplomat in Venice on a special mission. Prince Estezary, an Austrian envoy seeking to obtain secret papers in Colonel Althrop's possession, decides to use Harry's infatuation to gain the documents. Seizing upon the youth's jealousy, Estezary manipulates Harry into forging his father's name to a large check in order to purchase a diamond necklace for the princess. Estezary then threatens to expose Harry's crime unless he procures the documents. Stricken with shame, Harry agrees. When the princess learns of the boy's sacrifice, she confronts the Austrian and demands that he return the papers. As she struggles for the documents, she kills Estezary and then escapes, leaving her purse behind. Arriving at the Althrop home as the colonel sentences his son to death, the princess pleads for Harry's life and returns the papers. Harry is pardoned but his love is destroyed and he reviles the princess. She returns to her villa and learning that she is suspected of Estezary's murder, stabs herself. As she lies dying, Harry arrives to beg her forgiveness and she dies in his arms.
