Synopsis

In the period of Louis XVIII, while her self-centered husband is away with his troops, the Duchesse de Langeais is pursued by many men. When the famous Général de Montriveau arrives, her flirting turns to love for him, and although gossip says otherwise he believes her to be sincere until he learns that the duchesse has boasted of her conquest. He abducts her, but, unable to bring himself to inflict the torture he has planned, he releases her. A year of unanswered letters convinces the duchesse that her love is in vain, and she enters a convent. The general relents, however, and goes to her just before she is to take her final vows.
