Synopsis

Eve Leslie, a country girl, envies the life of Betty Howard, a famous actress, unaware of the fact that Betty's life actually has been full of tragedy. For years Betty has been seeking the whereabouts of a certain unscrupulous man, but to no avail. She has been advised by her physician to give up the stage, and she yearns for the type of existence which Eve has. Through Adam Moore, a rich young friend, Eve hears a lot about Betty, who is a "pal" of Adam's. One day, when Betty collapses while on a motoring trip with Stanton Skinner, she is brought to Eve's home and the two women become friends. Soon Rocco Erwin, the man whom Betty seeks, turns up and tries to rob Stanton. When he is caught, Betty pleads for him, and in return he takes her money, beats her, and leaves her for dead. Meanwhile, Skinner, who has fallen in love with Eve, invites her to his yacht. They are followed by Rocco, and during a confrontation, Skinner tells Rocco that Betty is his sister. Rocco then tries to kill Skinner while Eve crouches in terror. When Betty regains consciousness she and Adam go after Eve who, after her rescue, realizes that she loves Adam and no longer envies Betty's life.

Notes

Envy was the first in a series produced by McClure entitled The Seven Deadly Sins. Each film was a separate drama but each represented one of the seven deadly sins, and each had the characters of Adam and Eve, played by George Le Guere and Shirley Mason respectively, represented in some capacity within the story. The dramas were released on a basis of one per week. The entire series was re-issued in two reel installments in 1918. All of the films were based on stories from The Ladies World.
