Synopsis

Margaret Fowler, the daughter of a poor, cynical dressmaker, sends back her engagement ring to Dick Conklin, a clerk, because she wants the finer things in life, and her mother's pleadings have convinced her that she will be as miserable as her mother if she marries Dick. After the famous artist Le Moyne paints Margaret's portrait, Dick's boss, the libertine Henry L. Bancroft, aroused by it, seeks her out and offers his friendship. Although Margaret's mother is pleased with Bancroft's interest, Margaret resists his advances. When Bancroft's wife, a social worker, offers to adopt Margaret so that she can help with her work in the slums, Margaret is afraid to be so near to Bancroft and wants to refuse, but her mother insists, thus she goes to live with them. Mrs. Bancroft, however, is aware of her husband's salacious intentions and finds Dick, who marries Margaret, now relieved to escape Bancroft.
