Synopsis

In the summer of 1914, an Alsatian girl, Louise de Villars, is attacked by two German soldiers who kill her dog. She is saved by visiting American Hugh Brown, after which they fall in love. When war is declared, Hugh enlists in the French flying corps and shoots down thirty enemy planes until he is captured and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. He escapes with other prisoners being transferred to another camp and gets to Louise's house where his camp commander, Baron Von Steinbach, finds him and orders him to be shot. Louise offers herself to the Baron, who earlier had expressed interest in her, in exchange for written orders releasing Hugh. When Von Steinbach forces himself on her, she kills him and escapes with Hugh to an American trench where they are married by an American chaplain on the final day of the war. They then set off for Hoboken.
