Synopsis

During the early 1870's, Robert Jinks bets some friends that he can make love to opera star Madame Trentoni. Robert manages to arrange a meeting, and when he and Trentoni see each other for the first time, they instantly fall in love, and their courtship progresses rapidly. Now embarrassed by the wager, Robert tries to call it off, but his friends will not listen. Two of them, in fact, jealous of Robert's affair with Trentoni, go to her father and convince him that Robert's ardor is not the result of love, but rather of his determination to win the bet. The old man tells his daughter, who immediately breaks off her relationship with Robert. Finally, Robert gets in to see her and explains everything, and he and Trentoni begin making plans for their life together.
