Synopsis

Hiram Scudder, a blind cobbler, lives with his son, Tommy, and Alec Campbell, a lodger of whom Tommy becomes jealous when he overhears him paying attentions to his sweetheart, Peggy. The two fight, and one is killed, while the other attempts to escape with a satchel of money. The murderer is seized by the cobbler, who retains the money but is unable to prevent his escape. Meanwhile, an overturned lamp sets fire to the room, and the killer's victim is burned beyond recognition, although a pocketbook later identifies him as the lodger. For 3 years the cobbler waits for the murderer to return, and the villagers believe him mad. Finally, one night he does return and is strangled by the cobbler, whose revenge is complete when he is assured that his victim is Campbell.
