Synopsis

Richard Whitehead plays the bumpkin when convenient--as on entering Huntersville, where Samuel Hunter reigns supreme on the pool table and promotes a match, offering to wield the cue with a single hand; Whitehead soon ruffles Hunter's feathers. He goes on to concoct a scheme promoting some suspect oil fields and diverts suspicion by hiring Ray Caldwell, scion of a prominent town family, whose gullible but ingenuous nature is adored by Hunter's daughter, Louise. Hunter is thus forced to legitimize Whitehead's larceny even to the point of promoting sale of the stock. He then secretly buys the real deed to the property and starts a rumor that the black gold has indeed come through. His ruse prompts the original swindler, the wheedling Mr. Whitehead, to buy back his fraudulent stock. The tables turn once when oil really does come in and then again when Whitehead is informed who really owns the land.
