Synopsis
Ruth Judson, an evangelist's daughter, loves Hugh Lee, but she is troubled by his atheism. Then, one night, her undisciplined younger brother Tom gets into trouble by robbing the grocer. He runs to Hugh, asks him to get Ruth and then hides. Ruth arrives at Hugh's house wearing her robe and negligee, and when the grocer and his cronies, having followed Tom, also get to the house, they believe that they have caught Ruth and Hugh in the middle of a night of lovemaking. Enraged by the illicit affair, they prepare to lynch Hugh, but just as they are about to hang him, a lightning bolt destroys the tree that was to have served as the gallows. Hugh takes this as a message from God and quickly becomes a believer, and then Tom emerges to explain that it was he who had brought Hugh and Ruth together that night.
