Synopsis

Colonel Jessup of Mayville treats his young wife so harshly that she runs away with a theatrical company, taking her son, but leaving her baby daughter behind. After she dies, the boy, known as Byron Bennett, becomes the leading man in a small road company. The end of the company's tour comes abruptly in Mayville when the manager absconds with the proceeds of the one good house that the troupe has had in many lean weeks. Byron and his stranded companions find work in coaching the members of two rival fire houses in amateur theatricals. There Byron meets Grace Jessup, the colonel's daughter, and persuades her to take the leading part. Byron becomes fond of Grace, and when he overhears traveling salesman Percy Pennington brag that he has induced the girl to spend the night with him, Byron determines to save her honor. Rushing to their appointed rendezvous, Byron arrives just in time to rescue Grace from Pennington's advances. Meanwhile, the colonel has discovered that his daughter is not spending the night at her girlfriend's house as planned, and sets out to find her. He arrives just as Grace faints into Byron's arms, and shoots him, but after Byron recovers, all ends happily when it is discovered that Byron is actually Jessup's long-lost son.
