Synopsis

Disowned by her family for marrying John Larkin, Alice lives in poverty with her husband and children. Wealthy Ethel Lewis, on the other hand, is separated from her husband because she refuses to have children. Ethel sends a lawyer to Alice with the offer of $50,000 in exchange for the adoption of one of her children (Louise) and, when Alice reluctantly accepts, tells her husband that the child is their own. Alice visits the Lewis home frequently to be near her daughter, thereby rekindling Robert Lewis' old interest in her. In his jealousy, John shoots at Robert but hits Louise. Both women confess their actions . At this point Alice awakes to find this all a horrible dream. She refuses the lawyer's offer just as her Aunt Martha enters with apologies and Christmas presents.
