Synopsis

Drusilla Ives leaves her community of solemn Quakers on the Isle of Endellion to become the London servant of the profligate Duke of Guiseberry, the Lord of her village. She thrives on the lively London night life, and after the duke discovers her dancing talent, he helps her to become a professional dancer. Soon she is Diana Valrose, London's favorite dancer, slightly jaded by the attention lavished upon her. When her father and Quaker sweetheart, John Christison, find her consumed by ambition, her father's curse causes her to faint and fall from a steep staircase. Christison marries Drusilla's sister Faith, and after the duke refuses to make Drusilla his duchess, she later refuses his proposal after he is ruined financially. Drusilla returns to Endellion, where she meets the duke again, on the lonely rocky coast, and instead of both committing suicide, which each had planned to do, they marry and begin a new life.
