Synopsis

The Russian court's refusal to recognize the marriage of the Grand Duke Alexis and Lola Cortez, the prima ballerina of the St. Petersburg ballet, leaves the duke powerless to foil a plot against his wife's life. Lola flees to Paris, leaving her baby daughter Vasta in the care of Marta Antonovitch, who is in charge of the girls at the Imperial Ballet school. Years later, Vasta, ignorant of her parentage, has developed into the star pupil at the school and Michael Pavloff, impressario of the Russian ballet, learning of the girl's lineage, chooses her to dance in his Paris ballet, but Marta refuses to let her pupil go. Disguising herself as a boy, Vasta eludes the matron and reaches Paris, where she is starred in the ballet. Pavloff, an admirer of Vasta's mother, is also attracted to Vasta and kidnaps her one night when the stage is darkened during a performance. She is taken to Pavloff's apartment where her mother discovers her, shoots her abductor and reveals her identity to her daughter. At that moment, the duke arrives and, apprised of the situation, takes responsibility for the killing, testifying that he was defending his wife's honor. Lola then returns with her husband to St. Petersburg and Vasta stays behind to marry artist Richard Moraino.
