Synopsis
Mortimer, alias "Society Charlie," a well-known confidence man, becomes popular in New York nightclub circles, while Agent X-9, posing as Van Suydam Smith, a member of the smart set, is detailed to keep an eye on him. At a nightclub owned by "Tex," Smith meets Peg Hewlett, one of the entertainers, who gets him an invitation to the McShane party on a Long Island estate. During a game of bridge, Peg goes onto the terrace to join Smith; the room is plunged into darkness, and Mrs. McShane's jewels are stolen. After a series of events during which the jewels pass from one hand to another, Mortimer is exposed by Mr. Sidney, an insurance agent; and Smith, who has suspected Peg, realizes her innocence.
