Generations after Dugald Chandos, an early settler, stole a thousand acres from Chief Duskara, Hester Gray, Dugald's descendant, is about to inherit the land. She wants to marry Lee Duskara, the chief's great-great-grandson, and so restore at least half the land to its rightful owner. Hester's guardian, Colonel Ernest Dent, has come under the influence of Juliet De Cordova, a Mexican adventuress, however, and she convinces Ernest to marry Hester himself, then shift the deed to the land from his wife to Juliet. Ernest forces Hester into the marriage but continues his affair with Juliet and keeps on taking orders from her. Finally, Hester discovers Ernest's double-cross and tries to commit suicide, but Lee saves her. Dent soon dies of dissipation, and Hester marries Lee, who in court, has been awarded the rights to the land.
