Synopsis

Noah Goodheart, a merchant, brings his family to the northern timber country and becomes a competitor of Stoner's, though the latter threatens to put him out of business. The community's unfriendly feeling toward Stoner, because of his abusive treatment of his wife and his son, Dick, is aroused when Stoner ejects from his store a penniless widow seeking food for her starving children; but the Goodhearts come to her rescue, and as a result Stoner loses trade rapidly. Having forbidden Dick's meeting with Mary Goodheart, Stoner is enraged at learning they have been secretly married. He beats the boy into senselessness and causes the death of his invalid mother. Dick wanders in the wilderness until he is recognized and rescued by a clergyman. Then Dick and Mary's brother, Paul, who brings about Stoner's regeneration, ride together through a storm to Mary's bedside.
