Synopsis
Signa Herrick, a not very competent stenographer, leaves her small Wisconsin town when she learns that her boss, a friend of her deceased father, keeps her employed only out of sympathy. She comes to New York to her sister Janet Durling, who has been taught to shoplift by her husband, Jim, a burglar. After learning the truth about Janet, Signa lies to protect Jim from Detective Haggard and then moves to a mission house. When Signa becomes the secretary to young millionaire Olney French, who collects rare Oriental gems, Jim discovers this and sends Janet to investigate. French, who previously hated women, falls in love with Signa. French's half sister Mrs. Marbury and her husband Gerald resent Signa because she has succeeded in curing French's alcoholism, which the Marburys have encouraged because they stand to inherit his fortune. French's proposal to Signa is interrupted when Jim attempts to steal a jewel. Haggard arrives and, although the Marburys insist on Signa's complicity, Janet's confession exonerates her. French, whose faith in Signa never wavered, orders the Marburys out and embraces Signa.
