Synopsis

In order to forget Clare Wendell, the girl who jilted him, the wealthy James Armitage turns his estate over to his lawyer and journeys to Burma. Six years later, he learns that Clare is a widow, but upon returning home, he discovers that he no longer loves her; moreover, his lawyer has absconded with half of his fortune. James is attracted to Doris Athelstone, a strange girl who, in his absence, has settled into his home. Doris believes that the estate belongs to her father, whom she has never seen, and that James is an intruder. Further investigation reveals that Doris' father is, in fact, James's wayward lawyer, who, although he could not bear to see his daughter because his wife had died in childbirth, wished to provide the girl with every luxury. After promising the lawyer that he will never reveal this secret to Doris, James marries the girl in his house.
