Synopsis

When Mary and Fannie Graham, daughters of a good mother but a father with criminal instincts, are left motherless, Mary flees from her unhappy surroundings while Fannie, inheriting her father's disposition, remains and is raised as a thief. Years later, the sisters come into contact again when Flash Fan, attempting to divert the police, who are following her for purse snatching, ducks into an apartment building where Mary is sleeping. Fan puts her checkered coat on Mary and then escapes out the back of the building, leaving Mary behind to be arrested. At the station house, Mary is befriended by attorney David Norman, who establishes her innocence and introduces her to wealthy spinster Ann Maitland. Miss Maitland adopts Mary as her ward, arousing the ire of her nephew, Hector Maitland, who has designs on his aunt's fortune. Hector, who has met Fan when she attempted to pick his pocket, enlists the thief's aid in discrediting Mary. After securing a position as a servant in the Maitland house, Fan steals Miss Maitland's jewels and tries to frame Mary for the crime. However, Mary is vindicated by David, who, after exposing Fan's work, confesses his love for Mary.
