Synopsis

Mary Bussard is momentarily freed from the confines of her stuffy stepfather's wealthy New York home when he falls down an elevator shaft and dies. Sadly, she chooses further submission to convention after she learns that the only way she can get her inheritance to repay a poor widow cheated by her stepfather, is by living one year without getting married with the prissy Bussards of Boston. To enable them to collect the inheritance themselves, the Bussards try to make Mary's life unbearable, but wealthy bachelor Jimmy Winthrop falls in love with Mary to the dismay of the Bussards who want him for their daughter. The lovers overcome the Bussards' obstacles by having Jimmy's friend Ted Barnacle pose as Mary's new suitor. After arranging a wedding ceremony so that Ted can marry Mary "to protect her name," the Bussards finally get their long-awaited inheritance, which turns out to be $1.30 and a War Savings Stamp, when Mary marries Jimmy.
