Synopsis

Evelyn and her sweetheart William Bard horrify their Shaker community, which does not believe in marriage or in the perpetuity of the race, by wanting to get married. As a result, the Shakers drive William out of town, but not before Evelyn gives birth to a daughter named Eve. Evelyn soon dies, and after the Shakers inform William that Eve has died also, even though she is actually still living among them, he vows revenge on the entire community. Years later, now a wealthy businessman and determined to ruin the Shakers financially, William changes his name and returns to the community with his adopted son Rodney. Rodney meets Eve and they fall in love, but William remains relentless in his desire to destroy the community. Just as he is about to succeed, however, he finds out that Eve is really his daughter. His attitude softens instantly, and he finally approves of Rodney's romance with Eve, while also deciding to build a new and better home for the Shakers.
