Synopsis

At Fidelity Insurance Company, the board of trustees await the arrival of Ricardo Randall, an "idea" man who, they hope, will lift the corporation out of financial ruin. Ricardo arrives at the meeting without an idea, and as he stalls, waiting for inspiration to strike him, his former mistress' husband, Bernardo Perry, walks in the room. Ricardo then gets the bright idea of "insurance for wives" and explains that the company will work hard to insure that a wife is faithful, but if they fail, the husbands will receive compensation. He redubs the company the (In)fidelity Insurance Company, and he is made vice-president. As scores of husbands scramble to buy into the new plan, Mona Perry arrives and warns Ricardo that he is ruining the wives' lives. Ricardo declares his devotion to his secretary, Camelia Cornell, but as he awaits her arrival in a restaurant, he runs into another former mistress, Rita Martin. Rita seduces Ricardo and feigns an ankle injury so that he is required to take her back to her home. Camelia witnesses their departure in Rita's limousine and, for revenge, calls Rita's husband Eduardo at his office and offers him wife insurance. Eduardo refuses, as he trusts his wife, but he goes home to check on her anyway, and Camelia meets him, claiming that her boss, Mr. Randall, will arrive any moment with corroborating evidence. When Ricardo tries to leave, Camelia makes it appear as if he's just arrived and stuffs Rita's monogrammed underwear into his pocket. He shows the evidence to Eduardo and then sells him the insurance, but refuses to divulge the name of his wife's lover. After the ruse, Camelia agrees to marry the contrite Ricardo. Bernardo, meanwhile, hopes that his wife will be unfaithful so that he can collect insurance money. He arranges to have Eduardo seduce her at the Hotel Merael Mar, where he plans to take pictures of the seduction for proof. Bernardo's secretary, an agent for the insurance company, tells Ricardo of the scam. Ricardo arrives at the hotel, finds Bernardo on the fire escape, and kicks him as he's about to snap a picture of his wife and Eduardo. The two fall into the room, and Eduardo realizes that Ricardo was seeing his wife, as a familiar cigarette lighter falls from Ricardo's pocket onto the floor. Ricardo runs into his room, where Rita appears again, this time with an entourage of scantily-clad wives and photographers, who frame him in order to ruin (In)fidelity's wife insurance program. The plan works, as the policy collections ruin the company. Camelia, again estranged from Ricardo, finally reunites with her philandering employer after much hesitation.

Notes

The summary was based on a dialogue continuity in the Twentieth Century-Fox Produced Scripts Collection, and the onscreen credits were taken from a screen credit sheet in the Twentieth Century-Fox Records of the Legal Department, both of which are in the UCLA Arts-Special Collections Library. The title was translated as Insure Your Wife. The running time was calculated based on the footage given in NYSA records. According to information in the legal records, Anthony Coldeway wrote a treatment based on the play, and Bernice Mason and Winifred Dunn wrote an outline and original dialogue, but it is not known if any of their material was used in the finished film. Contemporary sources indicate that L. William O'Connell May have photographed part of this film.
