Synopsis
In nineteenth century Japan, Allan Carroll, an American sailor, is shipwrecked and taken in by the kindly Yori. Prince Iku, who has all foreigners trespassing on Japanese soil killed, sends his sister Omi San to investigate, and she falls in love with Allan. Iku seizes Allan and Yori, but Allan manages to kill Iku and escape to America. Fifty years later, Iku III is sent to America and works in a home where Allan Carroll III is a guest. To avenge his grandfather's death, Iku kidnaps Allan's fiancée Virginia and flees to Japan. With the help of a gang of American sailors, Allan kills Iku and recovers Virginia, but the aged Omi San is also killed in the battle.

This film was copyrighted under the title Ashes of Desire in 1919. It was released under that title to the state rights market in mid-1920 in a six reel version by Wilk and Wilk of New York. In the 1920 version, the location of the first part of the story was the Malaysian coast rather than Japan. The character played by Tsuru Aoki was called "Ka Sih," her brother was called "Hamba Tuan," and the character originally called "Yori" was called "Bin Tang." The 1920 version was presented by Frank J. Smith. According to modern sources, Catherine Carr wrote the scenario.
