Synopsis

After her father, a gambling proprietor in Spain, is killed and her husband, an English gambler, commits suicide, Chichita places her baby Helene in a convent. Fifteen years later, Helene runs away and subsequently marries Price Ruyler, a novelist. She soon becomes bored with domestic life and attracted to the glamour of a New York gambling house run by Nick Delano, who, coincidentally, is married to Helene's mother. At Delano's, Helene sustains heavy losses and although she pawns her jewelry and takes money from her husband's wallet, she cannot pay her debts. Madame Delano recognizes her and tries to help, but when Delano discovers this he telephones Price. Helene struggles with him and he falls to his death over a balcony. Madame Delano takes the blame for the death and dies in prison after swallowing poison to protect her daughter. A few yars later, Helene sews in front of a fire, as Price warmly embraces her.
