Synopsis

Jacques Revilly, an uncouth French farm laborer, tires of his neighbor's insults and decides to move to the Bohemian colony in Paris in order to pursue an art career. Yet even there, his unkempt appearance and surly ways earn him the name "the Beast." One day, he discovers the half-frozen body of Marguerite, a young girl, and takes her to his rooms where he gives her food and clothing. In Marguerite's presence, love enters Jacques' heart for the first time, and they plan to marry. Before that day arrives, however, Marguerite is assaulted by Horace Chapron, a blackguard who covets her beauty. Believing her to be guilty of infidelity, Jacques challenges the scoundrel to a duel. Although Jacques is wounded, he wins the duel because he learns the truth, and so the lovers begin a new life.
