Synopsis

Lucy Slatterley flirts with other men to the intense discomfort of her jealous husband, Norman, who resents in particular the attentions of a rounder named Kempster. Kempster makes Norman an irresistible proposal to take over a mining operation, however, and Norman leaves town to investigate the proposition. Kempster then makes advances toward Lucy, who, to avoid him, moves in with her friend, Josephine, a resident of the same apartment building in which Kempster lives. A fire breaks out in the building, and Lucy and Kempster meet in nightclothes on the fire escape just as Norman returns from his business trip. Norman refuses to accept her explanations and obtains a divorce. A year later, Josephine persuades Lucy to accept the proposal of Danny Leeson, a millionaire fop who dotes on her. Norman and Lucy become friendly again, however, but he still believes her to have been unfaithful. Lucy then arranges a meeting with Kempster in a mountain lodge, and Norman comes to her rescue (as she had fully intended). Norman then confesses to Lucy how much he has missed her, and Lucy tells him that there can be no love without trust. Norman finally decides to take Lucy back, trusting to love to see them through.
