Synopsis

Sonia Smirnov, "The Black Butterfly" of the Paris opera, begins an affair with Alan Hall, who had previously loved a peasant girl. Years before, a poor girl herself, Sonia had married an officer, become pregnant and then discovered that the marriage was not legal. After leaving her daughter to be raised by some peasants, Sonia went to Paris. When Sonia discovers that Alan's peasant girl is her own daughter, she insists that he return to her. Grieving over Alan, Sonia becomes a nurse at the front. One of her patients is the officer, Gaston Duval, who, she thinks, took advantage of her years before. Gaston, however, proves the marriage was real and vows that he had searched for her for years, and the couple is reconciled.
