Synopsis

Five years after Rachel Stetherill has disowned her only daughter because of her marriage, the girl, widowed with one child, is killed. Her boy falls in with a safecracker and soon becomes adept at the profession. Twenty years later, Haddon, the Stetherill lawyer, learns that Ladyfingers, a noted thief, bears a close resemblance to Mrs. Stetherill's husband. Ladyfingers, having fallen in love with Enid, Mrs. Stetherill's ward, attends a charity ball at the old lady's home, and while he is engaged in a conversation with her, a string of pearls disappears; the police accuse Ladyfingers, but the pearls are found and the case is dismissed. He accepts an invitation to visit her, but realizing he cannot win Enid's love he departs, leaving a note in the safe. When Rachel informs him that he is her grandson, Ladyfingers confesses his crimes, and after a 2-year prison term, he takes up farming and is happily married to Enid.
