Synopsis
After Madame Gerve, prima donna of the Opera Comique, refuses the marriage proposal of Monsieur Fayolle, the French Minister, she sings at a benefit for war orphans, and encounters two men from her past: Karl Wertz, the German ambassador, and Philippe Sardonia, her former lover. When Philippe insists on renewing their love, she says they cannot, and showing him her illegitimate baby, she explains that during the war, when their village was taken, she gave herself to Wertz, then an officer, to save Philippe from being shot by a firing squad. After Wertz attempts to resume their lovemaking, his suspicious wife Vyera confronts Madame Gerve, who lets Vyera listen when Wertz tries to force his attentions on her. Vyera kills her husband but is later acquitted of the crime. Vyera asks Madame Gerve to allow her to raise the baby, and the opera singer readily agrees, thus freeing herself to marry Philippe.

Sources conflict in crediting the production and distribution companies. It appears that the film was released in June-July 1918 as a Bluebird Photoplay Production, by Bluebird. It was later released in December 1918 as an Argosy Film Co. production, through M. H. Hoffman, for state rights exchanges. On January 13, 1919, it was released as a Universal Special Attraction. Sources also conflict about some aspects of the plot. Wertz is called both an Austrian and a German. Madame Wertz meets Wertz and Philippe after the war in Paris or Washington, depending on which release the reviewer saw, and the ending May have been different at one time, with the question of who is to keep the baby left undecided. The working title for the film was The Spawn.
