Synopsis

While delivering bank funds, John Tremaine, Jr. finds his sweetheart, Julia Cameron, embracing his brother David. Stunned, John delivers the money and leaves the country. Returning years later, John finds that his brother has died, that the family plantation is ruined, and that he himself had been a suspected thief when he left, since the funds he carried came up short. John makes the plantation prosper, falls in love with the banker's daughter, Isobel Malvern, and becomes the people's choice for Congress. Isobel's father, however, one of the few aware of John's alleged guilt, and already having forbidden him to see Isobel, threatens to denounce John as a thief if he accepts the nomination. Finally, Julia, David's widow, produces a letter in which David confesses to the crime, which allows John to run for Congress and marry Isobel.
