Synopsis

In 1959 adventurer Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau organizes a 7-month Franco-Dutch expedition 1,000 miles into New Guinea. Accompanied by six fellow explorers, four soldiers, and 60 bearers, Gaisseau travels on foot and by raft and canoe. The company crosses mountain ranges, descends into valleys, and charts the Princess Marijke River; its members are introduced to the rituals of cannibals, pygmies, and headhunters and plagued by leeches and swarms of insects. At the journey's end three escorts are dead; eight men have been wounded; and 22 have fallen ill.
