Trivia

The script underwent many rewrites; among other things, the title character changed from a tough-talking prostitute to a naive peasant.

Josef von Sternberg insisted on casting Esther Ralston, over studio objections that she was not up a major dramatic role in which she ages by several decades.

The film's distribution was cut short by the arrival of talkies.
