Synopsis

When Betty Lockwood's father dies, she goes to Graystone Gables, where he had been the caretaker, to spend a few hours alone. David Chandler, the owner, finds her there and tells her to come back often. Betty's mother marries Jim Weed, and one day Weed sees Betty and David together. Gossip begins that eventually drives Betty out of town. She stays with David's friends, the Sherwoods, and, meeting there frequently, she and David fall in love. Later, though, believing that David has been unfaithful, Betty returns to her mother, who is dying. One of Weed's sons begins abusing Betty, but David, who has followed her, fights him off. Now certain of David's love, Betty marries him and becomes the mistress of Graystone.
