Synopsis

Kate Tripler, an uneducated, motherless daughter of a hotelkeeper in a small Western town, tries to satisfy her craving for romance when Frank Barclay, a civil engineer from the East, arrives to build a bridge. Frank, who is engaged to Aline Webster, disregards Kate. After Jim Travers, an engineer whom Frank befriended, goes East and marries Aline's sister Alicia, Kate, egged on by drunkard Bill Carlin, destroys Aline's letter explaining that the newspaper accounts of the wedding erroneously reported Aline as the bride. After reading the newspaper, Frank gets drunk and in anger marries Kate. Later, Frank learns that Jim married Alicia, but Aline persuades him to stay with Kate. They move to New York, and although Kate has difficulty because of her lack of social grace, Frank gradually grows to love her. However, during a struggle with the blackmailing Carlin, Frank learns that Kate destroyed Aline's letter and orders her out. She returns home, improves her education, and writes to Frank. He realizes his love for her and they are reconciled.
