Synopsis

Betsy Griscom, living in Philadelphia at the beginning of the American Revolution, is the daughter of a Quaker family. One day her sister Clarissa borrows Betsy's cloak on her way to a tryst with Clarence Vernon, an officer in the British army. As the two embrace, Betsy's beau, Joseph Ashburn, passes by and concludes that Betsy is unfaithful. Later, he challenges Vernon to a duel, shoots the officer, and escapes by boat after throwing his coat into the river. When his coat is found, it is assumed that Ashburn is dead and Betsy reluctantly accepts the marriage proposal of John Ross. Widowed when Ross is killed in battle, Betsy meets Ashburn once more when he, as an aide to General Washington, is assigned to guard her during the fashioning of the flag. Believing that she is compromising his integrity, Betsy confesses to Ashburn that her sister's husband, Vernon, is hiding in the house. Arrested as a spy, Vernon is sentenced to death when Betsy discovers a packet of papers which contains the British soldier's discharge. Rushing to General Washington, Betsy secures a pardon, saves Vernon from the firing squad, and both couples begin new lives.
