Synopsis

When the elderly Basil Breckenridge is assaulted by a group of thugs, he retaliates by striking gang leader Connors, the son of the city's political boss. District Attorney John Andrews, Connors' protégé, tries the old Confederate veteran for assault, but at the trial, the lawyer's father, Judge Andrews, recognizes Basil as Captain Knighton, who during the war had befriended the wounded Andrews and nursed him back to health. When Knighton was reported dead, Andrews married his assumed widow and adopted his son John. Knighton later appeared, however, and after wounding Andrews in a duel, he fled the country. Anxious to make peace with Basil, Judge Andrews begs his son to dismiss the charges, but young John refuses, not recognizing his real father. As the jury announces its verdict, the defeated old soldier dies.
