Synopsis

In Poland shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, Austrian police arrest Vladimir Ilich Lenin as a suspected Russian spy and confine him in the prison of the town of Nowy Targ. He passes the time in thinking of the events preceding his arrest: Lenin, his wife Krupskaya, and her mother live in the town of Poronin in the Tatra foothills. From this point in exile, Lenin writes articles for the revolutionary journal Pravda . Ulka, a Polish peasant girl beloved by the family, helps with household tasks. She joins Lenin on a mountain hike and is profoundly impressed by his rapport with the peasants. Lenin meets her boyfriend, Andrzej, a shepherd devoted to the Polish nationalist cause. Andrzej sets his dogs against the town gendarme, Matyszczuk, when the gendarme accuses him of trespassing. Lenin shelters Andrzej from the police and tries unsuccessfully to sway him from national to class loyalty. Meanwhile, the young couple celebrate their betrothal. Lenin helps to smuggle Andrzej to Krakow and along the way learns of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Shortly afterwards, Ulka disappears; Lenin later learns that she was jailed and beaten when she refused to inform on him. Lenin is arrested by Matyszczuk, and Andrzej dies in the cause of Polish freedom. Released from prison at last, Lenin travels into neutral Switzerland with Krupskaya and her mother to continue his work for the revolution.
