Synopsis

Twelve-year-old Tanya stays with neighbors in Moscow while her mother is visiting her father, who is temporarily working in a distant location. Feeling rejected by her parents, Tanya develops an infatuation with Petya, an older youth who leads a Young Pioneer group. Her infatuation finally dissolves, however, when she sees Petya ice skating with a girl his own age. Meanwhile Tanya and her girl friend seek out some of the first Pioneers to arrange a reunion. A shy older man who proves never to have been a Pioneer nevertheless attends the assembly. After the Pioneer bugler finishes playing, the older man steps onto the stage and speaks of a bugler friend who was killed during the war. He then takes the bugle from the Pioneer and plays the anthem as his friend would have played it.
