Synopsis
The young and beautiful Anna becomes the wife of Russian diplomat Baron Alexis Karenin, and they live happily for a time until she gives birth to their child. As Alexis' attention centers increasingly on his work, Anna finds comfort in caring for her child. Yielding to the pleas of handsome cavalry officer Prince Vronsky, Anna becomes his mistress and finds with him the love which has been missing from her marriage. Alexis confirms his suspicions about the affair when he provokes her grief by telling her that Vronsky died, when he was only injured, and expels her from his home. Denied even a visit with her child and shunned by her friends, Anna seeks comfort with her lover, but Vronsky soon tires of the affair and takes up with a younger woman. The baron, trained in diplomacy, suppresses his suffering and refuses Anna's plea for forgiveness. In despair, Anna throws herself in front of a moving train, and her body is brought to Alexis' house, where he is finally able to express his sorrow.
