Synopsis

Alone in life, Kuzma Kuzmich, a war hero and skilled mechanic living in post-war Moscow, cannot adjust to civilian life but becomes an idler and drinks excessively. Hospitalized after a fall, he learns while recuperating of Natasha, a teenaged girl living on a kolkhoz, who has been searching for her missing father. Upon leaving the hospital, Kuzma visits the kolkhoz and passes himself off as Natasha's father. His idleness and drinking initially bring him into conflict with the farm director, but he meanwhile develops a genuine attachment for the kind and sincere Natasha. He eventually confesses his deception to her, but she refuses to believe him. He remains on the farm and, heartened by Natasha's love, begins to take part in the work of the community, once more utilizing his skill as a mechanic. Meanwhile, Natasha becomes romantically involved with Lenka. The two young people decide to marry, and Kuzma, who at last has regained a meaningful place in society, remains on the kolkhoz.
