Synopsis

Gena has begun to earn his own livelihood as an apprentice gas worker in Kiev, meanwhile devoting his leisure to his childhood hobby of raising pigeons. At work he is disturbed to discover that his supervisor, Maksim Petrovich, accepts tips from clients. He reacts by rising early and completing the daily work by the time that Maksim arrives on the job, sparking a transformation in the older man's outlook. Gena's life begins to change when he falls in love with Tanya, a student nurse. Tanya is surprised to find that Gena is not a member of the Komsomol youth group but spends his free time alone. As the young people face parental misgivings over their relationship, another romance develops between Maksim Petrovich and Gena's widowed mother. Gena arranges to join Tanya at a Komsomol meeting. On the way he sees smoke pouring from a garret window and rushes to the fire, extinguishing it before the fire engines arrive. At the meeting, concern at Gena's tardiness gives way to admiration as his heroism is revealed. He begins to take an active part in the Komsomol activities and becomes engaged to Tanya. Seeing that his pigeons are old enough to fly away independently, Gena releases them from their rooftop cage. [Synopsis based on Soviet version.]
